Introducing SFGreasecycle

A new recycling program that turns a big mess into big benefits.

A big grease problem.

Home and restaurant used cooking oils are seriously clogging San Francisco’s sewers and costing us all a lot of money—over $3.5 million each year to unclog the pipes. When poured down drains, cooking oil solidifies into thick layers inside drainpipes and sewer pipes, constricting water flow the way cholesterol affects blood flow in arteries.

Turned into big benefits.

But now the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is taking action. We’re collecting waste vegetable oil from City restaurants for FREE and recycling them into biodiesel, an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum diesel. San Francisco fleets will soon run on biofuel made from used cooking oils provided by our local restaurants.

Even a little grease causes problems.

Many residents generate only a bit of used cooking oil. But the cumulative effect from a lot of homes contributes to clogging sewers. Please don’t pour ANY used oil down the drain. Instead, collect it in a container and throw it in the trash.
